Shearwater Cove Wilderness Adventure Lodging - Seward, AK

I had the pleasure of staying and taking lifestyle and adventure photos at Shearwater Cove - oceanfront yurt lodging, sea kayaking, and hiking in Resurrection Bay near Seward, Alaska. Even with a steady drizzle throughout the week, this was the perfect spot to get out and explore the area in sea kayaks, hiking, and nearby tide pooling.

Charity Lehman & Jason Wilson are the owners and operators of this amazing location, and have thought through every detail to make sure guests have all the amenities they need- and none of the distractions they don’t. Okay okay, there may even be some amenities that you don’t technically need but make for a pretty amazing experience- I’ve NEVER experienced hot private showers at a backcountry yurt, but I sure won’t complain about it!

Shearwater Cove is 10 miles from Seward, Alaska, and is only accessible by boat. On the morning of check-in, we met the boat in the Seward Small Boat Harbor. We were lucky to have Jason himself as our captain, pointing out wildlife and neat spots to explore via kayak upon arrival. Pulling into the cove was a somewhat magical experience, with small glimpses of the yurts nestled into the trees, and the onsite host Leigh available to give us a short kayaking tutorial and point us in the direction of our yurt.

The yurts can sleep 2-4 people and are thoughtfully equipped with reading materials, games, and cooking equipment. We were surprised that there was hot and cold running water in the yurt, along with a propane range! The yurt kept plenty toasty with the heater.

Plenty to do within immediate vicinity of our yurt, with a hummingbird feeder on our porch, spruce tips to gather, and a great coffee-drinking view of the cove.

Though we are new to sea kayaking, the tutorial provided by Leigh, along with the strict safety measures (including life vests, a satellite phone in a dry bag for each yurt party to take kayaking with them and a sign-in / sign-out process) put us at ease. We paddled alongside a sea lion as it fished, and got to explore the Humpy Cove Waterfall and Fox Island Spit… again, with warm showers at the end to wash off the saltwater!

The nearby hikes accessible from the yurt were pretty stellar too, with great views despite the misty weather, and lots of fun foliage to check out!

We crammed a lot of adventures into a short time frame to try to experience it all. Sagar wanted to make sure we didn’t miss the opportunity to check if the bed was comfortable…

Can’t wait to return!
